The parliament secretariat on Monday issued a circular recognising Jatiya Party senior co-chairman Raushon Ershad as the leader of the opposition and its chairman GM Quader as deputy leader of the opposition in parliament.
Senior secretary Zafar Ahmed Khan notified the circular a day after GM Quader handed over a letter to speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury requesting her to appoint Raushon as leader of the opposition in parliament.
The position of the leader of opposition in parliament fell vacant with Jatiya Party founding chairman HM Ershad’s death on July 14.
On Sunday, the Jatiya Party decided that Quader would be the party’s chairperson and HM Ershad’s wife Raushon would be the opposition leader in parliament.
The decision came from a meeting of the party on Saturday night, said party secretary general Moshiur Rahman Ranga on Sunday at the party’s Banani headquarters in Dhaka.
