Evan’s life – a tale of decadence

‘Evan lured me into having physical relations with him several times on the false promise of marriage. He also threatened to release some private video clips on the internet’

Bahauddin Evan, who was arrested on Thursday in a case filed over the rape of an actress at his Banani residence, reportedly lived a decadent life since reaching adolescence.
Addressing a press conference at the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Media Centre in Kawran Bazar of Dhaka on Friday, RAB Media and Legal Wing Director Commander Mufti Mahmud Khan said Evan, the case’s lone accused, had admitted to the elite force that he raped the actress on Tuesday.
Evan also confessed to possessing video footage of the incident. Meanwhile RAB was able to gather further evidence based on the information provided by the accused during interrogation.
On his Facebook profile Evan claims that he studied at North South University and is now working at Dhaka University, although he dropped out of Cambrian College.
“A dropout of Cambrian College, Evan used to look after his father’s business at Banani. He became a drug addict when he was a fifth grader. His family sent him to a rehabilitation centre twice, but to no avail,” the RAB official added.
He married in 2008 following his parents’ decision and is a father of two daughters, said family sources.
Quoting the accused’s relatives, Mufti said several complaints had been filed against Evan for stalking and sexual harassment in the past and his family had become fed up with his unrestrained behaviour.
One of Evan’s relatives and an official of Banani police station told journalists that the accused’s father, Borhan Uddin Belal, had informed law enforcers about his son’s whereabouts so they could arrest him. However, the father declined to comment on the incident.
Arrest and remand
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mazharul Islam on Friday granted police four days to hold Evan in remand after they produced him before the magistrate’s court with a plea for seven days remand, confirmed BM Forman Ali, officer-in-charge of Banani police station.
Earlier, RAB-11 arrested him from the residence of one of his aunts in Masdair area of Narayanganj Thursday night. He was later handed over to Banani police.
About his arrest, RAB Commander Mufti said: “Evan first hid on the roof of his Banani residence Wednesday morning when the police raided his house after receiving the victim’s complaint. He spent Wednesday night at the residence of one of his relatives at Dakkhinkhan in Uttara and went to Narayangonj on Thursday.”
Evan seeks mercy from his father
Before the court started hearing the remand prayer, Evan fell to his knees, wrapped his arms around his father’s legs and cried out: “Forgive me, abba [dad]. I did not do this [rape]. I am a victim of conspiracy.”
His father consoled him, saying he would be released if his claims proved to be true. Abul Kalam, who was present in the court at the time and witnessed this, narrated the incident to the Dhaka Tribune.
Victim’s allegations
Evan and the actress got acquainted through Facebook and developed a romantic relationship.
He invited her to attend his birthday party and said he would introduce her to his parents, the victim mentioned in the First Information Report.
On Tuesday night, when the girl went to his residence, Evan raped her after mixing sedatives into her food. She further alleged that he took away her three mobile phones and money amounting to Tk15,000. The police have yet to recover the mobile phones and money from him.
“Evan lured me into having physical relations with him, several times, on the false promise of marriage. He also threatened to release some private video clips on the internet,” she said.
