A nine-day-old baby boy has allegedly been stolen from Jessore 250-bed General Hospital.
An unknown woman fled with the baby after giving commitment for financial assistance on Sunday evening.
Police held Nuru Mia, an employee of the hospital, for interrogation over the incident.
Tahmina, mother of the baby, said the baby was born eight days ago at her home in Keshabpur upazila. She along with the baby was firstly taken to the local health complex as the baby fell sick. Later, they were referred to Jessore 250-bed General Hospital on Saturday. An unknown woman introduced with them in auto-rickshaw while they were heading to Jessore from Keshabpur. The woman made commitment to give financial support for treatment of the baby.
On Sunday evening, the woman took the baby along with its grandmother (maternal) saying “sir who would give assistance is waiting in a microbus in front of the hospital for taking photos with him. Later, the baby was taken to the Queens Hospital of the town from where the woman fled with it, Tahmina added.
Queens Hospital authority said video footage was provided to police for the sake of investigation.
Illias Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jessore Kotwali Police Station, confirmed the news.
The stolen baby is son of Rezaul Karim, resident of Borondali village of Keshabpur upazila.
