Safe space to ensure girls’ educational rights stressed

RAJSHAHI, April 27, 20176 (BSS)- Ensuring safe space for girls through combating all sorts of violence especially sexual harassment against them has become an urgent need for boosting women empowerment, speakers in a discussion here yesterday mentioned.

They observed that sexual harassment at public places restricts girls right to education, right to mobility, right to freedom and right to life. So, the social crime must be checked through forging social movement. Gender-sensitive social mindset can help establish rights of the adolescents through reducing violence and repression against them.

The observations came at a view-sharing meeting styled “Prevention of Sexual Harassment against Schoolgirls and Violence against Women” held at Safawang community centre in Rajshahi city.

Kadirgonj Sporting Club organized the meeting in association with Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP). Hundreds of students both boys and girls from various schools, colleges and universities joined the event.

Additional Commissioner of RMP Sarder Tamiz Uddin addressed the discussion as chief guest with Convener of the club Munsi Asiqul Arif in the chair.

RMP Assistant Commissioner Golam Saklain, Officer-in-Charge of Boalia Police Station Shahadat Hossain and Ward Councilors of Rajshahi City Corporation Abu Bakkar Kinu and Bilksih Banu also spoke.

The meeting stressed the need for eliminating sexual harassment to the school-going girls collectively to reduce the rate of dropouts from the educational institutions. It also viewed that the mass-media has a pivotal role to play to create awareness among the general public through objective reporting.

Chief Guest Sarder Tamiz Uddin said emphasis should be given on collective efforts of all quarters including guardians, schoolteachers and members of the civil society for creating a safe space for the girls. Terming the child marriage as the major violence and gross violation of human rights he said there is no alternative to check it substantially.

More responsive role of marriage registrar and imams including other community leaders could be effective means of controlling child marriage as it leads to various violence and repression against women.
