Apparel workers of 20 to 25 factories at Ashulia on the outskirts of Dhaka went out on demonstrations seeking wage hike blocking Dhaka-Tangail Highway and vandalising vehicles.
Around 10 people were injured when police charged batons, fired teargas shells and used water cannon to disperse the protesters.
In Dhaka, workers also have taken to the streets at Darus Salam and Mirpur areas blocked Darus Salam Road near Government Bangla College.
United News of Bangladesh adds: the protesting workers took to the streets in the morning and put up barricade at Mirpur 1 and Ansar Camp area in Kalyanpur, halting vehicular movement in the areas.
Besides, the workers are also staging demonstrations at Shewrapara and Kazipara areas.
They also vandalised several establishments on the footpath in the area, said witnesses.
In Gazipur, hundreds of workers of different garment factories started demonstrations in the morning.
At one stage, the workers of ‘Target Fashion Factory’ tried to block Dhaka-Gazipur highway in Chandna Chowrasta area but police dispersed them by charging baton.
Besides, a chase and counter-chase took place between the owners group and the workers group as the workers did not join their work in BCL area.
Meanwhile, workers tried to block Dhaka-Tangail highway in BSCIC area in Konabari, leading to a chase and counter-chase between police and workers.
Besides, the authorities of at least 30 garment factories of the areas have declared their factories shut for today following the unrest.
Additional police have been deployed to avoid further trouble.
