Mashrafee bin Murtaza finally got something to tell in his favour in his regular chit-chat with Tamim Iqbal after dismissing the left-hander during their Bangladesh Premier League encounter on Tuesday.
Mashrafee bowled a brilliant spell to finish with his career-best 4-11, leading his Rangur Riders to a crushing nine-wicket win over Tamim’s Comilla Victorians at Mirpur.
Mashrafee’s exploits include Comilla’s top-four batsmen Tamim, Imrul Kayes, Evin Lewis and Steve Smith, which left the side reduced to 18-5 at one stage before they were finally dismissed for 63.
Rangpur eased into 67-1 in 12 overs for a crucial win against fellow title contenders Comilla, who boasted one of the strongest batting line-ups in the tournament. Mashrafee said among his four wickets Tamim’s wicket pleased him most as the Bangladesh opener always played him well in domestic competitions
‘First of all, amongst the four wickets, Tamim’s wicket was important. Smith’s wicket was also important. But Tamim always handled me well,’ Mashrafee told reporters after the match.
‘For a long time, Tamim has been playing well against me. Whether it is Twenty20, one-day match or four-day, he handled me well wherever he played. He always kept a good strike-rate also against me. So his wicket was positive for me for sure,’ he added.
Mashrafee started his first-ever four wicket haul in BPL with the wicket of Tamim, who despite his past impressive record against the bowler, struggled from the very first ball and hoisted a catch to Farhad Reza at mid-off after making just four of 10 balls.
Mashrafee then dismissed Imrul, Lewis and Smith one by one in a spell to surpass his previous best of 3-16 in BPL.
Mashrafee said Tamim’s wicket also raised his confidence, enabling him to rip through the batting line-up of Comilla.
‘As he is successful against me in most of the matches, it was good for my confidence level to get his wicket. Then obviously we know what Smith, Lewis can do for their side,’ he added. Mashrafee’s four wicket haul against Comilla put him in the top of the highest wicket-takers’ list in this year’s BPL as he was now leading the table with seven wickets in three matches.
Mashrafee claimed that he was mentally strong and well-focused despite joining politics recently.
‘Focus is really important,’ he said. ‘I told you earlier that the transition part was so difficult for me. But I was really focused and was able to hold it.’
