Dhaka South Juba League president Ismail Hossain Samrat was finally arrested on Sunday for his alleged involvement in illegal casino business.
A team of Rapid Action Battalion arrested Samrat and his associate Arman from Chauddagram in Cumilla early Sunday, confirmed Rapid Action Battalion.
Lt Col Sarwar Bin Kashem, director, legal and media wing of the battalion said they had arrested Samrat and his associate.
The government earlier imposed a travel ban on Samrat and froze his bank accounts for alleged link with illegal casinos.
As Samrat was brought back to Dhaka in the morning, a team of the battalion raided his office the city’s Kakrail area. The raid was being continued until 4:00pm on Sunday.
Officials said Samrat went into hiding after the law enforcing agencies launched a crackdown on casinos in Dhaka and elsewhere.
Another team of the battalion also cordoned off Samrat’s Santimagar house and raided Samrat’s another house at DOHS at Mohakhali in the city.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal recently said the Juba League leader would be arrested if police found any proof against him.
In the past couple of weeks, law enforcing agencies launched a crackdown on illegal casinos, arrested dozens of ruling party leaders and activists and also raided 20 sporting and recreation clubs in the capital.
