Khaleda gets conditional bail in graft cases

Former prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Monday filed a provisional application in the Appellate Division seeking leave to appeal against the High Court Division’s recent verdict increasing her jail term from five years to 10 years in Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Orphanage Trust Case.
In a separate provisional application she sought leave to appeal against the same verdict of the High Court Division that had dismissed her appeal to set aside her five years’ jail term in the Zia Orphanage Trust case.
On October 30, the High Court Division increased Khaleda Zia’s sentence after accepting the Anti-Corruption Commission’s application to increase her sentence.
She also sought bail and stay on her sentence pending disposal of applications seeking leave to appeal against the verdict of the High Court Division.
On the same day, the High Court Division directed the government and the jail authorities to provide treatment Khaleda Zia needs on advice from the medical board formed by the BSMMU for her treatment.
A bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil issued the directive after disposing of a writ petition filed by Khaleda Zia challenging the government decision to take her back to jail BSMMU on November 8 before her treatment was completed.
Since February 8, Khaleda Zia has been in jail for five years in the Zia Orphanage Trust case.
