BCL attacks DUCSU VP-elect Nur , demands re-election


The vice-president-elect of Dhaka University Central Students Union Nurul Haq Nur was attacked allegedly by activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League on Tuesday.

Nur and other leaders were attacked by some activists of Chhatra League at Teachers Students Centre, said witnesses.

They chanted slogans condemning the results of Monday’s election and assaulted Nur physically. Some other students, who were trying to save him, also came under attack and got injured.

Rejecting the results of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union elections, the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League are demonstrating in front of the Dhaka University vice-chancellor’s residence.

The BCL men started demonstration on Tuesday morning after quota reform leader Nurul Haque Nur was elected vice president of DUCSU in the elections held on Monday.

Dhaka University vice-chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman announced the results from Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban at around 3:20am on Tuesday amid protests by the supporters of Bangladesh Chhatra League.

Nurul Huq Nur, joint convener of Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakshan Parishad, got 11,062 votes while his nearest rival candidate Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon bagged 9,129 votes.

The BCL activists burnt tyres near the DU vice-chancellor’s residence on Tuesday morning protesting against the results and demanded re-election.

Additional police have been deployed on the campus.

Classes remained suspended at DU on Tuesday.

Earlier, most of the contesting panels on Monday boycotted midway through the long-awaited elections to the Dhaka University Students’ Union and hall unions marred by allegations of attacks on contestants, ballot stuffing, obstacles in the queues and administrative failure.
