Madrassah students in Brahmanbaria attacked baul singer Samsul Haque Chisti, better known as Chisti Baul, at Niaz Muhammad Stadium in the town on Saturday night.
The students vandalised the stage of Development Fair organised by the administration at the stadium, damaged the car of the vocalist and put a blockade on the road.
Witnesses said the students of Jamia Islamia Yunusia got angered at some comments of the baul singer during his performance at the Development Fair which they found ‘anti-Islamic’. Being informed, several hundred students came to the venue in procession and went on the rampage.
Police immediately intervened and took the vocalist to safe custody.
Later, at a meeting at Brahmanbaria sadar police station around midnight Chisti Baul offered apologies for his comments in presence of Brahmanbaria superintendent of police super Anwar Hossain Khan and teachers of the madrassah.
Later Samsul Haque Chisti told newsmen he might have made some ‘wrong’ comments due to his old age and illness. ‘I am sorry for that,’ he told journalists.
Police superintendent Anwar Hossain said the madrasa students got agitated for the lyric of one his songs he performed at the fair.
‘The situation is normal now,’ said the police officer.
