The cabinet on Monday formed a five-member committee to finalise the ninth wage board award for journalists and submit report by January 28, 2019.

Cultural affairs minister Asaduzzman Noor will head the cabinet committee and the other members are industries minister Amir Hossain Amu, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, information minister Hasanul Haq Inu and state minister for labour Mujibul Haque Chunnu. The information ministry will help the committee with secretarial assistance, said cabinet secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam at a briefing.

The recommendations of the commitee will be the final decision, said the cabinet secretary.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the last meeting of the incumbent cabinet before the 11th Jatiya Sangsad election at the Prime Minister’s Office.

The government on September 12 had directed all news media outlets, including print media and news agencies, to provide 45 per cent dearness allowance to their staff, including journalists and other employees, under the 9th wage board after finance minister AMA Muhith on August 28 approved a proposal to confer 45 per cent dearness allowance from March 1.

Cabinet secretary Shafiul Alam said the wage board appointed on January 29, 2018 had recommended 80 to 85 per cent increase on basic wages of journalists, 60 to 65 per cent increase in house rent and three festival allowances in a year.

At present, journalists and employees working in the newspapers and news agencies are getting wages with 15 slabs under the eighth wage board since 2013.
